Footplate Rides

NEW for 2024! Footplate Rides

In 2024, we’re offering you the chance to go on the footplate and join the crew as they take you on a full round trip of the line. You’ll get to watch what’s involved in operating one of our steam or diesel locomotives, as it hauls today’s passenger service. You’ll need to be physically fit and able to climb up into the cab and be able to stand for the duration of the journey, but you’ll be able to see first hand what it’s like for our volunteer crews.

Please note, this is not a full Driver Experience and you wont be driving the train.

Our Footplate Ride experience is £75 per person.

These experiences are available on the following dates:

Steam Locomotive:

10, 11, 14, 17 & 18 February at 1315
10 March at 1045, 1200, 1315, 1430 & 1545
29 March at 1315
1 April at 1315
5, 6, 26 & 27 May at 1315
16 June at 1045, 1200, 1315, 1430 & 1545
4, 11, 18, 25 & 26 August at 1315

Diesel Locomotive:

30 March at 1315
4 & 25 May at 1315
3, 10 & 17 August at 1315

Please note that Footplate pass holders must be aged 18 or over and complete a health and safety declaration prior to participation. Only one Pass holder can travel on the Footplate at a time. This activity may not be suitable for those with some disabilities, particularly where these affect mobility, concentration, dexterity and co-ordination. If you believe this may be a factor for the participant please contact us in advance to ensure the activity is suitable and to avoid any embarrassment on the day.
