Infrastructure Director (voluntary)
Purpose of this role
Ensure that the Board is effective in its task of setting and implementing the direction and strategy of the Avon Valley Railway’s Infrastructure department.
Commitment
One Board meeting per month plus the equivalent of approx 1 day or two evenings per week to support the Infrastructure team.
Main areas of responsibility
We’re looking for someone to provide strategic oversight of our permanent way and associated lineside infrastructure (buildings & structures, bridges & embankments, drainage & culverts, signalling, fencing and arboriculture). You’ll set the standards for inspection and maintenance to ensure the railway assets are effectively cared for and support the team to successfully discharge the requirements of the railway’s Safety Management System. You’ll also develop processes to ensure tasks are always undertaken by competent people and help grow the size of the volunteer workforce to make this happen.
You’ll work closely with other Directorates, especially Engineering and Operations, to foster a spirit of collaboration, ensure volunteering remains at the heart of the organisation, and work activities are prioritised and delivered on time and budget.
Key skills
Knowledge of, maintenance of infrastructure, ideally in a railway or similarly complex environment.
Strong leadership skills with ability to manage and motivate staff teams
Able to successfully articulate infrastructure and maintenance information to non-technically-minded
It would be preferable if you’re an affiliate of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers or similar, and attend regular continual professional development activity to ensure you’re aware of current best practice. An IOSH Managing Safely or similar qualification would also be helpful in demonstrating a level of management capability.
