Running a heritage railway requires a diverse range of people and skills. There are over 30 different volunteer roles at the Avon Valley Railway and, between them, our existing volunteers contribute over 30,000 hours a year to our cause. However, if we are to continue to grow, we need your help.
We’ve produced a Guide to Volunteering which gives more information about us and how you can get involved. It provides some introductory information on the roles we have available, and how we recruit new volunteers into the team. We’re a fairly small charity so, in order to provide the best possible welcome, we don’t recruit new volunteers all of the time. Instead, we have a more targeted approach where we aim to welcome people for specific roles at different times of the year or as the need arises. That way we can maximise the impact of a recruitment campaign and new volunteers will be supported by other like-minded people as they start their volunteering time with us. We are currently recruiting for Platform Hosts and what we call ‘Cleaners’ in our locomotive department. Our Platform Hosts work to convey the atmosphere of a 1950s British Railways Station, assisting in all aspects of the day-to-day operation. They form the essential link for the visitor between the Booking Clerk and the Ticket Inspector. By acting as visible representatives around the station, they play a key part in communicating our heritage and vision.
Our Steam Locomotive Department has a traditional structure, which sees new-joiners starting as cleaners before being selected for further training. The role of a cleaner provides a very good introduction to the work of the department. You will spend time learning the basics whilst assisting the Fireman and Driver with their preparation and end-of-day tasks. Turning out gleaming locomotives is not just for show, it is also an essential part of the ongoing maintenance process, which department volunteers are encouraged to become involved with.
