New for 2026, join us onboard the Pick-a-Pumpkin Express!
Step aboard Bristol and Bath’s slowest express train, hauled by one of our heritage locomotives. Your journey starts at Bitton Station, where you’ll enjoy a trip of the line, before heading towards Avon Riverside Station. Here you can alight the train and choose a pumpkin to bring back with you.
At Bitton Station, you can head to the canopy if you’d like to do some pumpkin painting and decorating. We’ll also have some spooky characters onboard the train, but don’t worry, there are only treats, no tricks, onboard our Pick-a-Pumpkin Express!
This event is suitable for all the family – including younger children.

Additional Information
Pick-a-Pumpkin Express – The Journey
Avon Valley Railway is approximately 3 miles. The total experience of a round trip lasts approximately 50 minutes (6-mile roundtrip journey), which includes a travelling time of 24 minutes, and 13 minutes at both terminus stations for photographs and to view the locomotive being run-round.
Your train departs from Bitton Station (BS30 6HD) and heads on a short 5 minute journey towards the northern terminus station at Oldland Common. There are opportunities to alight and watch the train crew uncouple the locomotive to run-round the carriages, re-attaching the engine to the southern end of the train.
Then it’s ‘all-aboard’ again for the trip towards the southern terminus at Avon Riverside, taking approximately 17 minutes (with a brief stop at Bitton on the way). Whist at Avon Riverside Station, your child will be invited to select a pumpkin from the platform. Then reboard for the return ride back to Bitton Station where there is the option to decorate their pumpkin within the station canopy.
Please note: we endeavour to provide a steam locomotive to haul the train. We reserve the right to substitute a heritage diesel locomotive if the steam engine becomes unavailable.
