The Avon Valley Railway owes its very existence to the volunteers who breathed life into the ruin that BR left behind in the 1970s. Without them, there would be no beautiful Bitton station, no track, no yard, no steam!
But the struggle to revive the line is far from over - in fact, we need volunteers and helpers more than ever before, because the AVR is a growing tourist attraction, with plans to grow even more. There's the southward extension to Bath, the River Avon Project, driving and firing the steam engines on running days, ticket inspecting and passenger guards, and work in the shop, buffet, booking-hall and stock maintenance areas!
Every one of these departments is run by volunteers, each giving up a little bit of spare time to help us keep the dream alive.
So, if you think you'd like to help out too (and we welcome help, however much or little you can give) please let us know, by contacting us. In order to volunteer, you must be a member (for insurance reasons) - but you'll be getting tons of freebies, so it's definitely worthwhile! You don't have to have any special experience, skills, or huge amounts of spare time. We'll find a way to put your talents to good use, and you'll feel so much better knowing that you've contributed to something worthwhile and made a real difference!
