1940s Day
[extra information] [ticket prices] [links] Saturday 23rd August 2008
Visit the Oldland Show and take the train from Oldland Common or the bus from outside the showground to Bitton Station. Meet the local Home Guard Unit manning their anti-aircraft gun alongside an 800 million candle-power searchlight. See the crashed Messerschmitt that they helped to bring down during a recent air raid, a Bedford Radio Truck and a Canadian Gun Tractor - plus motorbikes and civilian vehicles. You might even find some misbehaving evacuees and have the chance to jive to the music of the period. Jump on the train again and continue down to the river to find an encampment with a small contingent of American troops. With them will be half-track vehicles, Jeeps, GMC trucks and, to care for their welfare, a typical WWII First Aid Tent and personnel. Extra InformationThe Railway's Booking Office is open from 10.30am until 4.30pm. With trains running between 11am and 5pm. See our full timetable for train times. Remember that the Buffet has been given special dispensation to serve food between 10am and 5.15pm... no need to bring your ration cards! Tickets can be purchased at Bitton Station as usual and for those joining at Oldland Common or Avon Riveside, tickets can also be purchased onboard the train (cash only), where the usual discount vouchers and member's discounts apply. Please note: Parking is not available at Bitton Station (with exception of disabled parking). All visitors arriving by car will be directed to the Oldland Show car parks.
